The Twentieth Century Society deeply regrets the decision by the Department of Culture Media and Sport to grant a Certificate of Immunity for Milton Court.

Milton Court is the first part of the Barbican and as such should have been listed with the rest of the Chamberlain, Powell and Bon estate in 2001.  The Twentieth Century Society maintains that it is an important link to the earlier Golden Lane Estate, also built by these architects and Grade II and II* listed. It also is an outstanding building in its own right.

There has been large public support for the listing of Milton Court and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) also felt that the building should merit historic protection.

It seems from the DCMS’s own account (see attachment), that the COI has been issued against the advice of English Heritage. We see this as a particularly regrettable action, and are not aware of any justification for the Department to override the  carefully considered views of their own experts at both EH and CABE.
