The Twentieth Century Society

Campaigning for outstanding buildings

scenic backdrop

Just been down to Gosport to spend the night on a friend’s boat—we never cast off (long story, but its still left me feeling decidedly unstable!) Anyway one upside was a prolonged oppotunity to admire these murals:

They are by Kenneth Barden and J.E. Tryrrell, in unglazed mosiac by Carter’s of Poole, and date from 1963. Both harbourside tower blocks are apparrently sheltered housing, look in excellent condition and are said to be very well liked by their residents. Not sure how many of the marina folk appreciate them though!

If you want to see a photo without the masts, the mosiacs are included in our murals database on the website (see http://www.c20society.org.uk/campaigns/murals-campaign.html—  it’s example 14)  or there’s an excellent view from the Gosport Ferry.
