Owen Hatherley leads Weston Shore Walk, Southampton on 1st July
1 July 2pm – 4pm
An afternoon ‘walk and talk’ through some lesser known spaces of both Victorian and modernist Southampton with Owen Hatherley, writer on architecture and politics.
We will walk from Weston Shore to Royal Victoria Park in Netley, a distance of some 2½ miles. We will take in the 1960s tower block showpieces by the city architect Leon Berger and the Tyneside firm Ryder and Yates, majestically situated in front of a small beach, and continue our walk along the line of Southampton Water.
We will have views of the huge 1950s Esso refinery and 1970s Fawley Power Station as we walk towards the Royal Victoria Country Park, the remnants of the military hospital turned into a park in the 1960s. We will end at the 1940s wooden tea rooms, originally built by the YMCA for wartime use, in time for refreshment!
