New Event: Homage to Gibberd and Harlow Saturday October 28th

Homage to Gibberd and Harlow – Saturday 28th October 2017

Led by Elain Harwood and Christine Hui Lan Manley

This tour of Harlow accompanies the launch of Christine Hui Lan Manley’s biography of Sir Frederick Gibberd.

In the morning we will tour Harlow by coach, looking at the best housing and planning by Gibberd, who was consultant architect and planner to the town from 1947 to 1980. Gibberd introduced other important architects to Harlow and we will visit housing by F. R. S. Yorke, Clifford Culpin, Michael Neylan, Eric Lyons and others. We will visit Our Lady of Fatima by Gerard Goalen, an early example of liturgical church planning with Buckfast Abbey glass.

At lunchtime we will join the launch of Christine’s book at the Gibberd Gallery, which features Sir Frederick’s own fine collection of twentieth-century English watercolours. There will be drinks and a chance to buy the book at a discount price.

The afternoon will concentrate on Gibberd’s threatened town centre, and St Paul’s church with its fine mosaic by John Piper. We will return to Harlow Town station on foot through the Town Park so as to appreciate the quality of Gibberd’s planning and landscaping, realised with Sylvia Crowe who is commemorated there.

Meet at 10.05 at Harlow MILL Station – i.e. the small station serving the Old Town, NOT the main Harlow Town Station. A day return covers both stations.

There will be an opportunity to find lunch in Harlow Town Centre after the reception and we intend to finish around 5.15pm
