In 1998, the Twentieth Century Society published Journal no 3 The Twentieth Century Church which included a list or gazetteer of Places of Christian Worship 1914-1990. It was compiled by a team led by Elain Harwood and Andy Foster and has since served as an important resource for the Society in identifying key information about C20th churches and other places of Christian worship in the UK. However, Journal no 3 is out of print and the need to be able to search the gazetteer and arrange the entries in a variety of ways to support casework calls for the creation of a database from which details of particular religious buildings can be easily accessed. At the end of 2013, having gained funding from English Heritage, the Society is to update the work of 1998 and build a database that will support the future activities of the Society.
As part of this project, research will identify omissions from the original gazetteer and update it as regards listing status. As part of this updating project, it is hoped that C20 members with an interest in ecclesiastical buildings may be able to identify further examples to be included or point out any entries where information could be updated. This text-searchable PDF copy of the 1998 Gazetteer of Buildings of Christian Worship post 1914 shows the list of almost 2000 Christian places of worship arranged by architect and detailing the date of construction, dedication name, denomination, address and, if applicable, the listing grade. If you are able to provide any information on specific places of worship that do not appear on the 1998 PDF list, or do appear but would benefit from details being updated, please contact project researcher Luke Jacob by email.
