Vista Point, East Preston, Sussex
Sleeps: 9
1970
Architect: Patrick Gwynne
A modernist seaside gem with real wow factor.
Designed by Patrick Gwynne, one of the most important architects of the Modern movement in Britain, Grade II listed Vista Point enjoys stunning sea views with extensive gardens leading directly to the beach.
Designed as a summer house for Ken Monk, Gwynne’s Quantity Surveyor, Vista Point is in outstanding original condition with five bedrooms, a large living room with balcony, as well as a swimming pool and pool complex. The house is built around an impressive central wood-panelled spiral staircase with a glass-domed roof.
Vista Point is located on a quiet private estate within easy walking distance of East Preston’s cafés and pubs, and for seaside attractions, Littlehampton and Worthing are a short drive away.
Patrick Gwynne (1913-2003) produced a series of important and extremely original houses during the post-war period. He was just 24 when he designed The Homewood in Esher for his parents in 1937. It is a masterpiece of Modernist design taking inspiration from Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye; it was a significant contribution to the Modernist movement in Britain in the 30s, and is now owned by the National Trust.
After service in the RAF in Canada, Gwynne lived at The Homewood and ran a small architectural practice from there, producing a series of important and extremely original houses, each tailored to the needs of the site and the client. He also designed two restaurants on the Serpertine in Hyde Park, one of which still remains as the Serpentine Bar and Kitchen.
