Sign the Petition to help save unique Brutalist car park

We are extremely disappointed in Westminster Council’s approval of plans to demolish the magnificent car park close to London’s Oxford Street.  This features an elaborate facade of prefabricated concrete diamonds.   C20 has campaigned to save this building, backing a recent listing application which was unfortunately turned down.

We  now urge members to give their support to a petition to help save the building which already has over 800 signatures.  You can view it here www.change.org/p/sadiq-khan-save-welbeck-street-car-park-from-demolition.

Designed by architecture office Michael Blampied and Partners, the multi-storey car park was built in Welbeck Street in 1971 by department store Debenhams to serve shoppers to its flagship store.

When the application to list the building was turned down it was sold to developers who it is understood are planning to construct a hotel on the site.

Well done to Lee Mayne who started the petition. “I personally love this building, I can’t help but take a picture every time I pass by,” says Lee. “Although I’m not attached to the idea of it staying a carpark, I feel this building could very easily be adapted to another use protecting those beautiful diamonds!

“I feel that we are losing too many brutalist buildings of late, Robin Hood gardens and Sampson House amongst many. Let’s rally together to save this one!”
