The Wales Group were delighted to present their inaugural lecture by Jonathan Vining, an architect and commissioner of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales.
Later twentieth-century architecture in Wales, particularly for the forty-year period following the Second World War, does not attract widespread public appreciation – in fact there is a popular notion that in terms of post-war architecture Wales is a wilderness. But this is far from the truth because the country has a rich heritage of buildings in a modern idiom that bear comparison with contemporaneous examples elsewhere in the UK, and designed by architects engaged in the same wider currents and discourse. Jonathan Vining surveys the evidence of some of Wales’s best post-war architecture.
