Over more than thirty years (1986 – 2019) Ron Gittins created a large-scale visionary environment within his rented ground-floor flat. While Gittins did attend art school for a while, Ron’s Place represents a remarkable example of Outsider Art. In addition to large hand-moulded concrete sculptures, murals have been painted on walls and ceilings to create Egyptian, Roman, Greek, naval and aquatic themed rooms. Gittins artistic work was largely unknown to his friends and family before his death and represents an alternative, personal world created for private occupation and produced by a powerful imagination. The building was purchased by Wirral Arts and Culture Community Land Trust in March 2023 to preserve Ron Gittins’ legacy and to make his work accessible both online and through managed in-person visits.
