The Crucifixion at the Church of The Holy Rosary, Fitton Hill by the emigre Hungarian-Jewish artist, George Mayer-Marton, is a compelling mural described by Historic England as a “striking aesthetic combination of neo-baroque mosaic and modernist Cubist-influenced fresco inventively applied to traditional Christian iconography in a deeply personal evocation of suffering and redemption.” The fresco which surrounds the mosaic was painted over in the 1980s but trials in 2019 and 2021 have shown that the fresco survives under the paint, its original design and intensity of colour still visible and retrieval and restoration believed to be technically possible.
