Hans Feibusch was German Jewish refugee artist who came to Britain in 1933. Over his career he painted more murals for the Church of England than any other artist. After damage in the Second World War, St John’s was partially re-constructed and entirely refitted by Thomas Ford as the Festival of Britain church in 1951 and Feibusch’s Crucifixion, with a smaller Adoration of the Shepherds below, forms a part of this scheme. The church raised £55,000 for conservation of the murals including grants from Heritage of London Trust, the Kirsch Foundation and private donations and the work was undertaken in 2022.
