First showing: Illustrated talk on Cinema Architecture
Second showing: Visit to Edward Maufe’s Yaffle Hill House
In the morning, an illustrated talk on cinema architecture covering the first buildings to be used for showing films, through to the 1910 Cinema Act, the talkies, the super cinemas of the 1930s, and the subsequent decline of cinema-going. Featuring photographs of well known cinemas and several local examples, plus a section on the conservation of these buildings, pointing out examples of listed ones and discussing why a couple of local examples weren’t listed by Historic England.
In the afternoon, a visit to Edward Maufe’s Grade II listed Yaffle Hill House 1930 designed for Cyril Carter, a director of Poole Pottery, and now owned by his grandson who is restoring the property and is happy to share the delights of this white painted concrete two storey house with its blue pantile hipped roof.
