22 Weymouth Street listed as one of a very small and distinguished portfolio of private houses by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott

The Twentieth Century Society is delighted that this single-family two-storey private house in central London – just a block away from the RIBA Headquarters – has been listed by English Heritage as one of a very small and distinguished portfolio of private houses by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. The house was built in 1934 and designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in conjunction with his younger brother Adrian Gilbert Scott. Exceptionally elegant and designed in a restrained classical style, the building demonstrates some superb brickwork, as is characteristic of both brothers’ architecture. Three quarters of a century after its completion, it remains virtually intact externally and also retains a significant proportion of its original plan and fittings on the principal floor.
The Society put the building forward for listing after local contacts informed us of planning applications proposing radical alterations. We can now be confident that any future alteration proposals will be subject to listed building consent, and therefore closely monitored, so that the principal architectural qualities of this very special building are protected.
