Great article on our new President Fiona MacCarthy in Saturday’s Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2011/sep/02/fiona-maccarthy-life-writing?INTCMP=SRCH).  It’s prompted by her new book on Burne Jones, but also looks forward to her next project which is much more relevant to us–a biography of Gropius– I am really looking forward to that. 

The piece explains that MacCarthy used to write for the Guardian herself.  She joined in 1964 as a “‘Swinging Sixties’ correspondent”, and interviewed Alvar Aalto in Helsinki, as well as  David Hockney, John Lennon and Betty Friedan.  A 1965 advert for the paper showed her photo captioned “Fiona MacCarthy may look like a fashion model. But there are times when she writes like a sabre-toothed tiger. Particularly at the expense of pretension and plagiarism in Design.”— she still looks fantastic and writes brilliantly–we are very lucky to have her support.
