Good to see the new English Heritage Angel Awards getting such a lot of publicity. Of the 16 finalists two were C20 buildings which we have campaigned for—so good luck to them for getting that far and let’s hope for a C20 winner next year. http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/caring/heritage-at-risk/English-Heritage-Angel-Awards/
The English Heritage website has very little information about the buildings themselves, so here are a few more details about “our” two, both of which are grade II* listed:
The Roman Catholic Church of the Good Shepherd Woodthorpe Notts, 1962-64 was designed by Gerard Goalen, with wonderful stained glass by Patrick Reyntiens. It’s dalle-de-verre glass—that’s big chucky lumps of glass set in a concrete matrix, and its also got a concrete altar–it was one of my cases when I was an English Heritage Inspector and I love it.
The Worthing Dome, West Sussex was originally built as a multi-purpose kursaal in 911, by Theophilus Arthur Allen, but it was remodelled 1921 by R Kirksby Bowes. The interior survives remarkably complete and has a patterned terrazzo floor, decorative plasterwork and etched mirrors. . The main foyer area is still dominated by the large polygonal paybox of 1921 and it is all remarkably elaborate and exceptionally complete.
