Want to know more about the interwar factories designed by Wallis Gilbert and Partners? Architects Tim Murphy and David Hills have been drawing together all the archive material they can find, and visiting buildings still standing (the demolition of the practice’s flamboyant Firestone building over the August Bank Holiday in 1979 was a major spur to the 1980s listing of C20 buildings). They are giving a talk at the Bermondsey office of the firm for which they both work (the recently rebranded Purcell—used to be Purcell Miller Triton) on Wednesday 25th July, from 2-4.30 pm, and there will be an article on their project in the next C20 Magazine (out in September).
For more info see http://festival.britarch.ac.uk/whatson . Good to see that they had funding from the Council for British Archaeology — who are not just interested in stuff underground!
