Magna Maufe II: A study visit to the churches and memorial buildings of Sir Edward Maufe in London and Surrey
Saturday, 14 October 2017 – 10am to 6pm
Led by Robert Drake
Interest in the architect Sir Edward Maufe (1882-1974) has been rising in recent years with a biography by his granddaughter Juliet planned. By popular demand I am reprising an event held by C20 in 1997 on Maufe but with some variations. We meet at Gray’s Inn (High Holborn entrance) to see the Holker Library of 1958 there and the Chapel restored by Maufe after WWII then catch our coach out to his masterpiece Guildford Cathedral (1936-61) for an in-depth look stopping en route at his All Saints, Weston Green of 1939 in a sylvan setting. The return to London will be via Brookwood Military Cemetery to see the Canadian (1945-6 by Maufe), US (Egerton Swartwhent 1925) and other memorials, Runnymede Airforces Memorial (1954), probably his best London church St Thomas the Apostle, Hanwell (1934) and finishing at St Columba’s Church of Scotland, Pont St in Knightsbridge of 1954-6 (last section may be taken by Piccadilly line from Boston Manor depending on time and traffic factors).
