Library at St John’s College, Cambridge
Architect: Edward Cullinan Architects (now Cullinan Studio)
Ted Cullinan (now Cullinan Studio) conjured a techno take on Jacobethan at his St College Cambridge library, radically reconstructing and extending an existing Tudor Gothic style Victorian building on the site, ably demonstrating his ‘dynamic relationship with history’ in this light-filled and expansive new facility. A strategy for natural ventilation was developed with Max Fordham, finding external expression through distinctive rooftop lanterns, and contributing to making this Cambridge’s first truly ‘green’ building. The master of St John’s at the time admiringly called the new library ‘a cage of light and learning’.
