Baggy House, Devon
Architect: Hudson Architects
A six bedroom family home, Baggy House is a building of contrasts, and a remarkable synthesis of modernist and vernacular elements. Situated on one of the most unspoilt stretches of Britain’s coastline, it mediates between the soft Devonian landscape and craggy sea cliffs below. With gables and a tapering chimney stack that nod to Mackintosh and Voysey, the north facing thick masonry walls produce high thermal mass. Whereas the south facing walls feature light-weight timber, steel and glass construction which benefit from solar gain and incorporate ways of naturally lighting and passively ventilating the living spaces.
