Just had a visit from Jean Wee, Director of the Singapore Preservation of Mounuments Board. She is particually proud of getting this building, Former Singapore Conference Hall and Trade Union House (see http://www.pmb.sg/?page_id=941) “gazetted”—their equivalent of listing. It’s a great example of how a modern building need not require heavy servicing. Built in the early 60s it has never needed airconditioning as a natural ventilation system was an integral part of the original design.
She also tells me that in Singapore monuments are used for government funded speed dating events–in an official bid to use their charms to promote romance and marriage. Fascinating to compare our work in very different circumstances. Catherine
