Am loving this image– not exactly a building–it’s a children’s playground at the base of tower blocks on Clarence Avenue in Clapham, London. I’ve just been sent the photo, and am not sure who designed the structure (I’m assuming it was someone in Lambeth’s excellent Architect’ ‘s Department), but I love its robust detailing and lack of any deterministic figurative imagery— it could be a mountain or a castle or whatever you fancy, and it’s pretty much totsally vandalproof–which lots of modern play areas certainly aren’t (I live nearby and am amazed by South London dogs’ fondess for devouring rubber swing seats, for instance) .
Hoping it makes it to Edmund Bird (long time supporter of C20)’s forthcoming book on post war Lambeth Architecture.
