Brutalism by Bike – Sunday 20th August 2017
Led by Elain Harwood – author of Space, Hope and Brutalism
This bicycle tour will be a spin round familiar buildings (exteriors only), but bicycles help us to see a lot and from unusual angles. The emphasis is on quiet roads and flat terrain, and will include sections of the Regent’s Canal. All participants must provide suitable bicycles, be competent cyclists, possess a cycling helmet and agree to undertake the tour at their own risk. Carrying a spare tyre, water and snacks are advisable.
Buildings include the King Solomon Academy (Leonard Manasseh); the Battleship Building (Bicknell & Hamilton); Cheltenham Estate including Trellick Tower (Ernö Goldfinger); Corringham (Kenneth Frampton); Welbeck St car park (Michael Blampied and Partners); former Central London Polytechnic Engineering Building (Lyons Israel and Ellis); Department of Education and SOAS, University of London (Denys Lasdun & Partners); Brunswick Centre (Patrick Hodgkinson); City of London University (Richard Sheppard, Robson & Partners); Haggerston School and Balfron Tower (Ernö Goldfinger); Claredale and Usk Street towers (Lasdun), concluding at Robin Hood Gardens.
