This replacement church built to honour Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran pastor, theologian, key founder of the Confessing Church and anti-Nazi dissident. Bonhoeffer had preached in the previous German Evangelical Church between 1933 and 1935, before it was subsequently destroyed by bombing in 1944.
