In 2002 the church was gutted in an arson attack, demolition was considered but 600,000 was raised for refurbishment. Drawings for the reconstruction were in the name of E. C. Harris, Capital Project and Facilities Consultants, Manchester. They involved a reduction, making the church half its original length
