The Order of the Friars Minor Conventual of Great Britain and Ireland establised a new parish in 1928 and built a small church and school in 1929.
A new Friary was built by Weightman and Bullen in 1951 and the current church was built for the Franciscans by Weightman and Bullen 1956-58 from designs by A. G. Bullen of Weightman and Bullen.
