Words reaches us of two North West Art Deco Study Weekends on 1st – 3rd August 2014 and 6th – 8th March 2015 organised by Adrian & Amy Sumner. They offer a chance to immerse yourself in Art Deco in Liverpool and Chester, with lectures, visits and informed commentary, based in one of Britain’s most ancient cities, and visiting one of its most dynamic.
The Study Weekend includes:
• Two presentations by Adrian Sumner on the world of Art Deco and its architecture • Visit by coach to Liverpool, including Anglican and Metropolitan Cathedrals, Mersey Tunnels and High Deco Queensway Tunnel Ventilation shaft, the original Aerodrome building (including lunch), and a panoramic tour to include the Philharmonic Hall, Littlewoods Building, Sefton Park Synagogue, St Columba’s Anfield and city centre cinemas (plus Penny Lane) • A conducted tour of Chester’s Grade 2 listed Odeon building (architect Robert Bullivant forthe Harry Weedon Partnership), soon to be its new Theatre/Library • A visit to English Martyrs Church, Wallasey, a Grade 2* listed building designed between the two World Wars by F X Velarde, but not executed until 1952-53. The church is unique in English Architecture and is sometimes described as Neo-Romanesque. It features an ‘Expressionist’ interior, with memorable artworks by Philip Lindsey Clark and Herbert TysonSmith among others • Venue tours and talks by selected local experts • All admission fees • Study pack • Two nights dinner, bed and breakfast at Chester’s historic Queen Hotel
