News from the South West Region

Some buildings in our region have been highlighted recently in the Buildings at Risk list 2017 and in Society Casework. High Cross House at Dartington, (William Lescaze 1932), has been included in the former, after we observed its decaying state when we visited it as part of our ‘English Riviera’ weekend last year. The Casework committee is planning to put forward Pillwood House, Feock, Cornwall (Sue Rogers, John Millar, 1974) for listing and also St George’s Church, Goodrington, Devon (E.B. Maufe, 1938), and we hope both of these are successful.  As was noted in the recent bulletin about Buildings at Risk, a positive solution was found for The Western Morning News Building at Derriford, Plymouth, (not in Bristol as written in the email), a building previously on the risk list. We hope to organise a visit to that building later this year.

Regarding events, our first visit of the year will be to County Hall, Exeter, (McMorran & Whitby 1954-64), where Bill Horner, County Archaeologist, will give us a tour commencing at 11.30am on the 22 April.  There will be a charge of £5 per person, payable on the day. Afterwards we plan to have lunch and a look at post war central Exeter.

On 1st July we are planning a joint event with the West Region, looking at C20 Taunton.
This will be a full day looking at a range of commercial, local government, educational and arts buildings. The itinerary and detailed information is being finalised at the moment.
