Sunday 18 December 2016 2pm
The Maggies, 165 Shirley Road/School Road, Hall Green B28 9LA, Birmingham.
Come and join us for a Christmas social occasion in an Art Deco leisure ensemble in one of Birminghams’ south suburbs. We will start in an Art Deco pub by EF Reynolds (1875-1945), a Birmingham based architect from the practice Wood, Kendrick and Reynolds. Reynolds was influenced by the Dutch architect Dudok and also by the design of the ocean liners of the Cunard Star Line. The Maggies, formerly called The Three Magpies, was built as an improving pub and also became known as an Irish pub. It has survived well inside and out. Behind the pub is the Bowling Green House also Art Deco in style. Hall Green is a suburb with much interwar housing, most of it in a neo-Tudor style, semi-detached/terraced, and there are some Art Deco apartment complexes dotted about, with a good cluster near Petersfield Road.
Reynolds designed a sister pub, the Baldwin, also in Art Deco style, about a mile away; this has been quite altered so we may just stay put in the Maggies, as the mood takes us. A realstyle 1960s band starts playing at 5pm.
Meet: outside The Maggies, if it is not raining, inside if it is. Leader: Katriona Byrne 07770670322. Free to members or prospective members.
Non Members: £2 Booking: not necessary but it would be nice to know if people are coming!
