We will start at 10.30am from Newton Abbot where we will visit the recently restored Grade II-listed St Luke, Milber (Arthur C Martin, 1936-63). In Torquay we will visit St Martin of Tours by Cachemaille-Day (1938) with its spectacular interior (includes a tea break); and Central Church by Narracott Tanner and Andre (1976). Lunch will be in central Torquay where there will be the opportunity to view the Central Library, Grade II listed (1937) linked to the town hall and the rather splendid ‘Electric House’, also listed. A suggested walk around other sights in central Torquay will take in Union Street, Castle Circus House, the Pavilion and others. In the afternoon we will head to Paignton, stopping to look at St Paul, Preston, also by Cachemaille-Day, a 1930s version of a C15 church, and finish about 3.30pm at St George, Goodrington, by Edward Maufe (1939 and later), where refreshments are kindly offered.
This event is charged at £15, the majority of which will go towards donations to the churches, and is payable on the day. As we have not planned transport, we would hope that some attendees will be willing to give lifts to those who come by train. Spaces are still available so please email Tony if you would like to come. Tour notes will be sent out by email.
