Event: March visit to Bournemouth

We are all looking forward to the talk by C20 Society Senior Conservation Adviser Henrietta Billings this Saturday, 6 February. She’ll be talking about casework, and we have a couple of prospective candidates in mind!

After this our next event is on 12 March in Bournemouth. A special treat for fans of the 1920s and 30s, this will be a chance to remind ourselves of the days when this seaside town considered itself a centre of contemporary luxury and glamour!

Meeting at 10am for 10.30 at Bournemouth Pavilion. The walking tour itinerary to include:

• Bournemouth Pavilion, 1929, Grade II listed.
• Cinemas (1929/1937), former Ice Rink and Palace Court Hotel 1935 (now Premier Inn) in Westover Rd. With the two cinemas destined to move, what is the future for these buildings?
• House of Fraser (1920 – Jazz Moderne) and former Plummer Roddis department store (1938) in Old Christchurch Road.
• Daily Mail Offices (1934, Grade II listed) in Richmond Hill.
• Roundhouse Hotel (1969, by Dekotel Ltd), it was the first new hotel since the 30s.
• Former Odeon cinema in Lansdowne (1937, George Coles).
• San Remo apartments Boscombe (1930s, Grade II listed).
• Boscombe Pier/Pierhead (1889, rebuilt 1927 and since Grade II listed).
