On 25 March, members of C20 West Midlands joined local residents in raising a glass of bubbly and eating a fabulous emerald-themed cake – all in celebration of the official opening 55 years ago to the day of the West Point housing development, in Allesley Village, Coventry.
The event, organised by Coventry based arts and heritage group &some, received musical accompaniment from the Ashfield Ensemble brass quartet who played variations on Happy Birthday whilst touring around the estate’s small squares and cul de sacs – much to the amusement of locals!
A range of commemorative artworks, including embroidered house portraits, an illustrated comic brochure, and plates by Adrian Baynes (pictured above) are part of a series of four artist residencies. Each will culminate in a solo exhibition – one per month until 4 July – at the West Point 55 pop-up gallery.
The West Point 55 project is funded by Arts Council England.
