The C20 Southern Group is delighted to welcome celebrated architect, Kate Macintosh to give the C20 Southern annual lecture this year. Kate studied at the Edinburgh School of Art and following graduation spent time in Warsaw, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki. Returning to work in the UK Kate Macintosh went on to design buildings for ‘public benefit that were at once bold, original and humane’ (Rowan Moore, Guardian). Her buildings include the famous Dawson Heights in West Norwood (1966-74) to provide homes for nearly 1,300 people on a sloping site while working for the local authority in Southwark. Moving on to Lambeth Kate designed a sheltered housing scheme – 269 Leigham Court Road. The scheme, a 44 flat complex, often described as ‘a modern gem’ has subsequently been listed and renamed Macintosh Court. She went on to work for the counties of East Sussex and Hampshire continuing her commitment to publicly funded sheltered housing, schools and fire services. Kate’s design of a playground in Weston, Southampton winning a RIBA award in 2005.
Kate will talk about her career and work and her lifelong commitment to the importance of investment in public sector buildings and housing of the highest quality.
