Murals

28 Islington Green Mural, Semi-abstract mosaic, 1963-64

Status: Listed Grade II
Condition: Fair condition
Type: Mosaic
Owners: City of London Corporation
Location: Islington Green School

The murals were commissioned in 1963 specifically for the school. They are semi-abstract pieces constructed of glass, shards of China and tiles, gold smalt and tesserae as well as complete tiles. Since we put them both forward for listing in October 2007 one of the murals had been demolished (the one on the right) despite planning constraints put in place to ensure their survival during development of the site. A terrible waste of a key piece of public art in London – but at least the remaining one has been saved. It was the first listing put forward as part of our campaign and the first listing success for the campaign.
