Created in 1973 with funding from  the estate of local cotton manufacturer and major town benefactor, William Thompson, Charles Anderson’s 150ft long concrete relief – depicting athletic energy and ability – originally decorated the Thompson Recreation Centre. When the centre was demolished in 2006 the frieze was preserved and later installed at Crow Wood Leisure Centre in 2011 with funding from local businessman Andrew Brown.
