Commissioned by the Arts Council of Great Britain and the London County Council’s Arts Scheme, Magic Garden was created for Holman Hunt Primary School in 1961 by Francis Carr with the intention ‘…to bring colour, light and the vividness of nature into the school… ‘ It included 25 different sorts of materials  such as mirrors, enamel, resins, copper, tree bark, marble, cork, shell, porcelain and even two clock faces and was an open invitation to the pupils to look carefully and investigate the contours, textures and qualities of each material. It was a visually kaleidoscopic, tactile artwork that was interactive before the phrase was ever coined. It gained national press and television coverage at the time but health and safety concerns led to it being boarded up. With support from C20 Society and a grant from the Heritage of London Trust the mural was restored by Francis Carr in 2008.
