The crypt of St Elisabeth’s, Eastbourne contained a remarkable 23m mural by Hans Feibusch’s of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, commissioned by Bishop George Bell. As a German Jewish artist Feibusch had left Nazi Germany in 1933 and at St Elisabeth’s used John Bunyan’s allegorical story to tell his own story of escape and arrival in England. St Elisabeth’s was closed on structural grounds  in 2003 but before its demolition in 2021, Feibusch’s mural was removed with funding from the Church Commissioners and placed in storage. It is hoped that an appropriate local site for its future display can be identified.
