The husband-and-wife team of Henry Collins (1910 – 1994) and Joyce Pallot (1912 – 2003) lived and worked in Colchester. They created a number of artworks for sites in Colchester but were also responsible for a range of commissions across the UK (and internationally) making an important contribution to post-war UK public art. The Colchester’s Southway Subways were installed in in 1973 -1974, celebrating the locality and its history and enriching the streetscape. Colchester Civic Society began fundraising for the murals’ restoration in 2014 and C20 Society supported the Civic Society’s and Colchester in Bloom’s application to the Heritage Lottery Fund which resulted in a £55,000 grant in 2017 for full restoration and interpretation. The project also received support from Essex Heritage Trust and The Hervey Benham Trust.
