BBC Television Centre was the first purpose-built television studio complex in the UK. Designed by Graham Dawbarn from 1949 and constructed between 1953 and 1960, it included a characteristically colourful and vibrant, abstract mosaic mural by John Piper in the reception lobby. Parts of the centre were listed in 2009  before the BBC decided to dispose of the building and major plans for residential and hotel redevelopment of the site emerged. Mixed-use redevelopment has preserved the listed structures and the Piper mural.
