Completed in 1974, William Mitchell’s 30-metre, bronze-faced glass reinforced plastic (GRP) mural was installed above Bracknell’s town-centre Mothercare shop. Telling the history of the Bracknell area from pre-Roman times onwards, it was intended by Mitchell to “create a sense of place and a feeling of permanence.” The Bracknell mural is an early example of the use of GRP in public art, chosen as a medium on grounds of cost and because of the limitations on fixing heavy bronze panels. The mural became threatened by proposals to redevelop much of the town centre but following public concern and a listing application by C20 Society, it was removed to storage in 2015 prior to the demolition of the Crossway shopping centre. Deemed too large for the new Lexicon centre, it was installed along the side of the nearby Braccan Walk Car Park in 2020.
