When completed in 1962 the Co-operative Insurances Society’s headquarters was – at almost 400ft – the tallest office building in the UK. By G.S. Hay, chief architect of the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS) with Gordon Tait of Sir John Burnet, Tait and Partners, the building symbolised a confident moment for Manchester and the CIS. The interior utilised high-quality materials and was designed by Professor Misha Black and Alexander Gibson from the Design Research Unit. Mitchell’s 30ft x 12ft abstract fibreglass mural is located in the entrance foyer.
