C20 Volunteer opportunities from June 2013

Opportunities for volunteers to help C20’s Conservation Advisors – from June 2013

One of our volunteers is travelling over the summer months before returning to us in September, and a second is leaving London at the end of May, so C20 is looking for volunteers to help our conservation advisors register and process all planning notifications received in the C20 office, either online or by post.  We are currently looking for someone who would be available from June to end August 2013.

All local authorities are obliged to notify C20, and other amenity societies, of alterations and proposed partial or total demolitions of listed buildings. A few local authorities only notify us about 20th century buildings, but many notify us of all planning applications related to all listed buildings, conservation area consent applications, and local development frameworks. We also receive notifications from Church authorities for proposed alterations to church buildings. All these applications need to be checked to see if the applications relate to buildings that fall within our period.

This is a good opportunity for volunteers interested in understanding how the Society is consulted, and the range of building types and large scale applications with which we are involved.

The majority of notifications are now received online and, once it has been established that they are of our period, various documentation relating to the application needs to be downloaded and saved so that the conservation advisors have all the necessary information to hand to enable them to consider any proposed changes.

A volunteer who is computer literate, has some knowledge of architecture, and possibly the planning system is needed to help with this process.  Full training will be given but this voluntary role may best suit someone who is available for one or two days a week (ideally on a Thursday or Friday) whilst looking for employment in architecture, planning or building conservation.

Travel expenses and a lunch allowance can be paid.  If you are interested please contact c20volunteering@gmail.com  before 15th May, or Henrietta@c20society.org.uk from 16th May, with your details, cv and stating relevant experience.
