New C20 guide to South Norwood launched
C20 Society has been commissioned by the London Borough of Croydon to produce a self-guided walking tour, exploring the modern heritage of South Norwood.
Located in the north of the Borough, South Norwood is one of 68 High Street Heritage Action Zones across the country, with investment awarded from Historic England to unlock the potential of South Norwood’s high street, fuelling economic, social and cultural recovery and breathe new life into the area for future generations.
The new South Norwood ‘ModMap’, produced by C20, plots an easily accessible 60-90 minute walking route around the High Street and surrounding residential neighbourhoods, profiling 9 buildings and pieces of public art – all built between 1924 and 1997. These include shops, churches, community murals, Art Deco apartments, post-war housing estates, the celebrated 1960s Library, and the world famous Selhurst Park – home of Crystal Palace Football Club.
Free copies of the ModMap are stocked at the Library, and can be picked-up from various shops and cafes in South Norwood. Alternatively, you can download the map directly from the C20 website and print at home.

The walk is launching during Croydon’s stint as London Borough of Culture 2023. The programme promises to be a big, bold and cross-cultural celebration of our unique identity, heritage and character, with lots of opportunities to take part.
Walking tours are popular events in South Norwood, bringing new arrivals and long-time residents together to discover and celebrate their area. This project was commissioned to compliment the existing walks created by the community and local historians.
To, C20 led a walk around, and was also commissioned by the Council to lead a guided walk around the twentieth and twenty first century architecture of Croydon Town Centre, as part of the the annual Open House London Festival.
