Redcar Library turned down for listing
Despite a recommendation from English Heritage and significant support from the architectural world the Minister for Tourism and Heritage, John Penrose, has refused to list Redcars pioneering library building.
Citing changes to the distinctive roof structure and other minor alterations, including the installation of security screens and fencing and internal subdivisions – both fully reversible additions – the Minister has not given a particularly robust defence of his decision .
The Twentieth Century Society, along with the buildings architects, ABK are now looking carefully at the reasons for the decision and considering whether or not to push for a review.
