13. College of Estate Management, University of Reading
Status: Listed Grade II
Architect: Howell, Killick, Partridge & Amis
Owners: University of Reading
Location: Queen's Road, Reading
Designed by Howell, Killick, Partridge & Amis (1970-3) to house the College following its incorporation into the University of Reading. With its strong silhouette and distinctive form, this is an important building by one of the foremost British architectural practices of the post-war period. Pevsner notes approvingly that architecture at the University at this time ‘reached a climax’ with this ‘linear megastructure that is at once rigorous and extravagant in its deployment of closely spaced concrete framing’.
The university announced plans to substantially remodel the building or potentially demolish it.
Due to this threat, the C20 Society applied for listing. The university responded by applying for a Certificate of Immunity. This was refused and the building was listed at Grade II in 2016.
The university continued with plans for major alterations to the building which C20 strongly objected to. These plans have been put on hold but C20 continues to monitor the situation.
