Coming of Age

A beautiful essay in fitting comfortably into a sensitive historical landscape without pastiche or pomposity, Hopkins seized this rare opportunity to build a large-scale purpose-designed theatre in the countryside, as only he could. Despite posing a challenge in its close proximity to Sir George Christie’s family home, a red brick neo-Elizabethan building set in magnificent country house gardens, Hopkins response was to build in a manner that was absolutely functional and modern. Yet there’s also a great sense of sympathy and poetry in the selection of traditional materials: handmade bricks, silver grey lead roofing, reclaimed pitch pine that gives the 1,200 seat auditorium an almost magical glow.
