The building (which is listed) was the Belfast headquarters of the Amalgamated Transport and General Worker’s Union and designed in the International style. In 1994, it was described by Historic Buildings and Monuments as “a very assertive building – dramatic in its impact, exhibiting a range of modernist features in a well worked out scheme”. The five storey tiled mural which reaches the full height of the building depicts the industries of Northern Ireland: a ship, cranes, a factory and a plane and, at its base, lines of workers.
