The C20 North West Group’s summer trip will be coach tour of five inter-war churches with extensive schemes of mosaic on 24 June. Held in conjunction with the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society, it provides a rare chance to see the work of the Manchester firm Oppenheimer, which came into its own in the inter-war period under Eric Newton’s direction. We will be joined by Robert Field, an authority on the work of Oppenheimer and Eric Newton
The tour will include five dramatic churches: St Willibrord’s Clayton, St Patrick’s Collyhurst, Our Lady and St John near Chorlton, St Joseph’s Heywood and finally St John the Baptist in Rochdale (pictured) a vast church with a large and early concrete dome.
Austere on the outside, these Roman Catholic Churches are delightful boxes of exotic jewels to the inside, unusual for British churches of this age and this will be a special opportunity to visit them all in one day.
