Once again the pressure is on this listed shopping centre, as the owners seek to increase their floor space. Backed by English Heritage, we have strongly objected to plans currently under consideration by Milton Keynes Council to drastically extend the centre with a new 90,000 sq ft anchor store. Our casework committee felt that the horizontal emphasis of the long building would be seriously disrupted by the proposed projecting structure with its strongly vertical panels from floor to roof line. We have pointed out that the application fails to respect the original spatial concepts of the building, and would interrupt its plan form. The Council is due to decide on the proposals this spring.
